Harley 883 – The Story

By Indra Gunawan

harley 883 sportster

Since 1957 Harley Davidson have been produced a motorcycle titled the Sportster, yet it was not until 1986 that the first Harley 883 rolled off of their production line. As well as these four motorcycles there are 3-1200 Sportster Harley Davidsons and the XL50. Certainly the 883 Sportster is one of the most well recognized of all the custom motorcycles that people can purchase around the world today and below we take a look at the 4 models that Harley Davidson have to offer.

  • Sportster 883 XL – Of all these types of motorcycle that Harley Davidson produce this is the cheapest of the lot and will cost anything from $6,595 up to as much as $7,990.
  • Sportster 883 XL Low – Although this bike is actually slightly more expensive than the first model we have mentioned above you will still find it is reasonable in cost at the moment. You should expect to pay between $6,995 and $8,390 for one of these.
  • Sportster 883 XL Custom – Yet another great looking motorcycle which is part of the Harley 883 family and will set you back anywhere from $7,795 up to as much as $9,555. Along with an enlarged rear axle which has improved these bikes stability, this motorcycle company has made improvements to the frame. This results in reduction in the amount of gear whine that all Harley Davidson motorcycles use to make. Then in 2007 they changed their bikes engines from being carburetted to them being fuel injected.
  • Sportster 883R XL – The most recent model to be included into the Harley Davidson 883 family and although not the most expensive you can still expect to pay $7,795 up to $9,090 for this one.

As with all Harley Davidson’s the 883 models provide you with the same ride quality and prestige that the more expensive models offer.

Motorcycle Riding

Overview Motorcycle Riding

motorcycle riding lessons

Sure some have the natural motor skills to perform well on a motorcycle but these refresher tips are there to make you more competent on your motorcycle while also boosting your ego since others will be impressed by your riding skills.

This lesson will discuss Limited space maneuvers. If I am going slowly in a parking lot or driveway, why do I need to practice these types of motorcycle riding maneuvers? Practice turning at low speeds, and do not forget to use the counterweight technique to help balance your motorcycle at slow speeds. You can also move off the center of the seat, opposite from the turn, to improve balance and turning capability.

Police Motormen practice doing “U” turns within two marked parking spaces. The trick is to use your clutch friction zone and rear brake to get the motorcycle to maneuver and handle at very slow speeds. I initially practiced these techniques and was amazed at how difficult it was to turn your motorcycle around by performing a “U” turn while trying to keep the turn within two parking spaces.

Next I added in figure eights and slow crawl riding as if I were in a parade. The benefits of practicing this riding technique are that you become more skilled with handling your motorcycle. While attending motorcycle events where parking is at a premium, this slow speed practice will help you maneuver through the crowded parking lot without smashing into and pedestrians or parked motorcycles. Other motorcyclists noticed my skill. So dust off your motorcycle and dust of your stale riding techniques and hit the nearest vacant parking lot for some much needed practice.

- If parking in a parallel parking space next to a curb, position the motorcycle at an angle with the rear wheel to the curb.

- If using the side stand, turn the handlebars to the left for added stability; lock the forks for security.

- Park the motorcycle in first gear for extra stability, particularly if on an incline.
